Meridian by Amber Kizer

As she grew, the animals got bigger, and soon they were finding her at school to die in her presence. Meridian became an outcast, labeled by her classmates as Reaper, Gravedigger, and Witch. Each death she witnesses weakens her body, and loneliness weakens her spirit. On her sixteenth birthday, she witnesses a deadly car crash. The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima
HarperVoyager

Summary (Goodreads):

Times are hard in the mountain city of Fellsmarch. Reformed thief Han Alister will do almost anything to eke out a living for himself, his mother, and his sister Mari.  Ironically, the only thing of value he has is something he can't sell.  For as long as Han can remember, he's worn thick silver cuffs engraved with runes.  They're clearly magicked-as he grows, they grow, and he's never been able to get them off.

While out hunting one day, Han and his Clan friend, Dancer catch three young wizards setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea.   After a confrontation, Han takes an amulet from Micah Bayar, son of the High Wizard, to ensure the boy won't use it against them.  Han soon learns that the amulet has an evil history-it once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago.  With a magical piece that powerful at stake, Han knows that the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back.

Meanwhile, Raisa ana'Marianna, Princess Heir of the Fells, has her own battles to fight.  She's just returned to court after three years of relative freedom with her father's family at Demonai camp - riding, hunting, and working the famous Clan markets.  Although Raisa will become eligible for marriage after her sixteenth name-day, she isn't looking forward to trading in her common sense and new skills for etiquette tutors and stuffy parties.

Raisa wants to be more than an ornament in a glittering cage. She aspires to be like Hanalea-the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. But it seems like her mother has other plans for her--plans that include a suitor who goes against everything the Queendom stands for.

Procession of the Dead by Darren Shan
HarperVoyager

Summary (Goodreads):

What had I done before coming to the city? I couldn't remember. It sounded crazy but my past was a blank. I could recall every step since alighting from the train, but not a single one before.

Young, quick-witted and cocksure, Capac Raimi arrives in the City determined to make his mark in a world of sweet, sinister sin. He finds the City is a place of exotic dangers: a legendary assassin with snakes tattooed on his face who moves like smoke, blind Incan priests that no one seems to see, a kingpin who plays with puppets, and friends who mysteriously disappear as though they never existed. Then Capac crosses paths with The Cardinal, and his life changes forever.

The Cardinal is the City, and The City is The Cardinal. They are joined at the soul. Nothing moves on the streets, or below them, without the Cardinal's knowledge. His rule is absolute.

When Capac discovers the extent of The Cardinal's influence on his own life, he is faced with hard choices and his own soaring ambition. To find his way, Capac must know himself and what he is capable of. But how can you trust yourself when you can't remember your past?

Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder (Review)

Summary:

Controlling the Past.
Controlling the Future.

With an execution order on her head, Yelena has no choice but to escape to Sitia, the land of her birth. With only a year to master her magic - or face death - Yelena must begin her apprenticeship and travels to the Four Towers of the Magician's Keep.

But nothing in Sitia is familiar. Not the family to whom she is a stranger. Not the unsettling new facets of her magic. Not the brother who resents her return. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her rare powers, a rogue magician emerges - and Yelena catches his eye.

Suddenly she is embroiled in battle against good and evil. And once again it will be her magical abilities that will either save her life...or be her downfall.

Magic Study starts where Poison Study left off; Yelena returns to her homeland, Sitia, to meet her family and to study the art of magic with the Fourth Magician Irys.

I think this series just keeps getting better and better. A whole new culture is introduced with different ways of living and different customs. We find out more about where Yelena really came from as she tries to discover her own identity.

Magic Study introduces new characters such as Leif. Yelena's brother who is somewhat unhappy about Yelena's return to Sitia.

I loved the introduction of all the new characters especially Yelena's parents who's relationship had me giggling at times with their playful banter.

Old characters also return, though sometimes not in the way you'd expect. Ari and Janco provide a lot of comic relief in dire situations and Valek, as always, plays an amazing supporting character to Yelena.

The plot line is very intriguing. Yelena has to deal with being a student of a high-ranking magician, petty gossip and her love-life....oh and also a serial killer preying on young girls such as herself.

Once again, ladies and gentlemen, the second book in the Study series really does have it all!

It is a terrifying mix of high technology -- a living building which pervades the novel as an ever-watchful, ever-vengeful character, and a typical medieval torture chamber -- chains, great halls, dungeons.

A young prisoner, Finn, has haunting visions of an earlier life, and cannot believe he was born here and has always been here. In the outer world, Claudia, daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, is trapped in her own form of prison -- a futuristic world constructed beautifully to look like a past era, an imminent marriage she dreads. She knows nothing of Incarceron, except that it exists.

But there comes a moment when Finn, inside Incarceron, and Claudia, outside, simultaneously find a device -- a crystal key, through which they can talk to each other. And so the plan for Finn's escape is born ...

Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine (review)

Summary:
Morganville's such a nice place to live...
And die, If you don't mind
that sort of thing.

When Claire Danvers learnt that her college town was run by vampires, she did what any intelligent, self-preserving student would do: she applied for a transfer and stocked up on garlic. The transfer's no longer an option but the garlic may come in handy.

Now Claire has pledged herself to Amelie, the most powerful vampire in town. The protection her contract secures does little to reassure her friends. All of a sudden people are turning up dead, a stalker resurfaces from Claire's past, and an ancient bloodsucker extends a chilling invitation for private lessons in his secluded home.

Midnight Alley starts of where Dead Girl's Dance ends; Claire had pledged herself to Amelie to save her friends, however, she soon realises it's not what she expected it to be. As always Claire Danvers finds herself in more danger than ever before.

Amelie introduces Claire to an ancient vampire called Myrnin and instructs her to study alchemy with him. The frenzied Myrnin soon reveals to Claire a secret that could change the future of vampires and humans alike.

I'm delighted with how Claire and the rest of the gang are developing throughout the series so far. Claire is growing up in more ways that one, Michael is more responsible than ever and yet has loosened up a bit. Also, Eve has  become a tad more serious and answerable (probably because of Michael).

The one problem I have with this book, however, is Shane. I feel Shane has gone backwards in his development rather than forwards. Shane is easily provoked and now he has a 'thing' against Michael for reasons I'm not going to give away (just in case you haven't read the last book in the series). I still love Shane though; he's most girl's dream guy.

Once again, I have to mention the pace of these books. They really do engage you completely with the plot, action and all sorts of problems between each character that have to be overcome.

All in all, Midnight Alley is  a huge improvement to the last book and is full of creative, captivating plot-lines that leave you breathless in anticipation. Yet again, the book ends with a HUGE cliffhanger that kind of comes out of nowhere and would leave any reader shocked.

Poison Study Review

Summary:

Choose:
A quick death
or slow poison...

Yelena has a choice - to be executed for murder, or become food taster to the commander of Ixia. She leaps at the chance for survival, but her relief may be short-lived.

Life in the palace is full of hazards and secrets. Wily and smart, Yelena must learn to identify poisons before they kill her, recognise whom she can trust and how to spy on those she can't. And who is the mysterious Southern sorceress who can reach into her head?

When Yelena realises she has extraordinary magical powers of her own, she faces a whole new problem, for using magic in Ixia is punishable by death...

Poison study starts off introducing Yelena. Yelena has admitted to murdering the General Brazell's son Reyad and was sentenced to death by hanging.

When the time comes to face the hangman's noose, however, she instead finds herself in Valek's office. Valek (the Commander's personal security chief) then offers Yelena a choice; to be hanged, or to become the Commander's food taster.

This book had me hooked from the first page; the descriptive writing, originality and the pace of the story enveloped me completely.

I particularly loved the rate at which Yelena's past was revealed. It's not the typical book where the protagonist brings to light the events that brought her/him to where he/she is towards the end of the book, all at once, in a fit of anger or passion. Poison Study, rather, exposes Yelena's reasons for being in the dungeon, for murder, and for what happened to her family gradually throughout the book, keeping the reader enthralled. It also helps that Yelena's past is a past like no other I have read before.

All of the characters in Poison Study captured my attention with their mystery, wit and unique relationship with Yelena. Because I have to tell you; most of them had some form of relationship with Yelena some way or another; be it an enemy for murdering their son, protecting them from poisons or working undercover for them to expose the person(s) trying to overthrow the government! Yep, this book sure has it all!

On the whole, Poison Study was a captivating read and has to be one of the best books I  have read this year!

Dead Witch Walking Review

Summary:

The underground population of witches, vampires, werewolves - creatures of dreams and nightmares - has lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But after a genetically engineered virus wipes out a large part of humanity, many of the 'Inderlanders' reveal themselves, changing everything.

Rachel Morgan, witch and bounty hunter with the Inderland Runner Services, is one of the best apprehending supernatural lawbreakers throughout Cincinnati, but when it comes to following the rules, she falls desperately short. Determined to buck the system, she quits and takes off on the run with an I.S. contract on her head and is reluctantly forced to team up with Ivy, Inderland's best runner...and a living vampire. But this witch is way out of her league, and to clear her name, Rachel must evade shape-changing assasins, outwit a powerful businessman/crime lord, and survive a vicious underground fight - to the death...not to mention her own roommate.

I have to start off by saying that I felt this book took forever to read. I really couldn't get into it until the final stages. That's why this review will probably seem more like a rant than anything; I'm trying not to focus on what I didn't like but rather what I did. Clearly, I'm finding it somewhat difficult.

I liked the idea behind the story; the world the characters were set in. Supernatural creatures such as witches, pixies, vampires and shape-shifters lived among the humans (with the human's knowledge that they exist) after a deadly virus genetically engineered by the humans wiped out most of their population. The virus didn't have any effect on the Supernatural, leaving them able to reveal their existence to the humans. A relatively cool idea right?

The big problem was; I didn't like the protagonist set in this wonderful world; I thought she was stupid at times and that she didn't think things through.

I actually loved reading about Ivy (the vampire roommate) and Jenks (the pixy) more than Rachel. Ivy's history was intriguing, original and very well thought out while Jenks was absolutely hilarious and refreshing to read about.

Also, the main villain in the story, Trent Kalamack, was a genius. I was half-expecting him to repent for his ways and for Rachel to eagerly fall into his open arms. But, alas, that did not happen. Maybe if it did, I would have liked Rachel just a tad more!

All in all, Dead Witch Walking was a slow read that I almost didn't finish. It had it's moments but they were certainly not due to Rachel Morgan and her quick wits (notice the sarcasm?).

In a world where angels are beyond redemption, Alex thinks he's found one that might deserve mercy. Alex is a ruthless assassin - of angels. Forget everything you've heard about them before. As far as Alex is concerned, the only good angel is a dead angel...until he meets Willow. She may look like a normal teenager but Willow is no ordinary girl. Half-angel, half-human, Willow may hold the key to defeating the evil angels. But as the hunter and the hunted embark on an epic and dangerous journey and Willow learns the dark and terrifying secrets of her past, Alex finds himself drawn to Willow...with devastating consequences. Eoin Colfer reinvented the fairy, Stephenie Meyer reinvented the vampire, L.A. Weatherly reinvents the angel! This is a heart-pounding, knuckle-whitening, paranormal romance action-adventure for fans of the "Twilight" series. This is the first in a devastating new trilogy.
